Getting Dirty

Dirt, soil, terra, ground, loam, mud, clay, earth, … It doesn’t really matter what label you prefer to use. What matters is what it does. It provides plants with nutrients and helps the roots form a stronger network making it difficult to remove the plant from the ground.  I love connecting with it. There is something about its fragrance and texture that energizes me. I like putting my hands in it when I turn the soil or repot a plant.  I love feeling it on my feet when I walk barefoot on the grass or in a garden.  When I do this, I feel balanced and know I’m symbolically feeding the roots of my soul.  The dirt reminds me that no matter what troubles I have I can wash it off and feel whole again. Sometimes we have to wash our hands more than once to get all the soil out of our pores and under our nails. You know what? The dirt gradually disappears.
