Why are we obsessed with sharing this information with “friends” and family?
Every three or four months, I need to take a break from social media. I see a different side of acquaintances, friends, and family online than in person and it is bothersome at times. Over the last decade, I’ve learned I have friends, acquaintances, and family who are trolls, political activists, extremely conservative/liberal, racist, sexist, egotistical, ignorant, and spreaders of false information.
Do we post because we want to actually share information or are we wanting to get people’s attention?
I know a few couples who post the their marital issues online and others who publicly name those who have wronged them. I know several people who are so desperate for attention that they post daily pictures of themselves. Why do we need to know what your makeup looks like or what you’re wearing to every event you go to? An occasional picture of yourself is nice but one to five a day? It’s the same for those who most meme after meme and nothing more. Three to fifteen memes per day is excessive. It is my opinion that those who frequently posts pictures of themselves have significant self-esteem issues and those who only post memes are afraid to let people see inside them.
Are we that unhappy with our lives that we need to escape day to day reality via social media? Why are we more comfortable expressing ourselves behind our keyboards than in front of people we know?
What is your purpose for social media?
My sister says I post my life on Facebook. I tell her it’s because I have only cats to talk to. 😀
